Let's first get one out of the way. The Nintedo Wii/Wii-U. Here are the reasons why you may pick / not pick the Wii.

Let's first get one out of the way. The Nintedo Wii/Wii-U. Here are the reasons why you may pick / not pick the Wii.
- Reasons to pick
- You want to play Mario games (Yes - they are available only on the Nintendo platforms)
- The platform has got a lot of fun, family oriented games. Over the last many years, Nintendo has been targeting the "whole family gaming" market, which is wonderful.
- The original Wii is priced at Rs. 20K (NOTE: This model has been officially retired now. I.e. Only the units that are in the market will be sold. Nintendo has stopped manufacturing this now).
- Reasons not to pick (Oh by.. there are lots)
- Nintendo isn't even there in India officially
- The original Wii was a terrific console and changed the game. This version is officially being ramped down now. The successor Wii-U was launched in 2012 and has not been successful. Word on the street is that they are focusing on the next version of the console NX and the launch date is yet to be announced
- The extinct Wii will set you back by Rs. 20K (+ additional for games) and the Wii-U by about Rs. 35-40K (sold through other people who import it from other markets).
- Support / Service centers - don't exist.
- In summary (for Nintendo Wii)
- If you want a casual gaming console for a couple of years that will play family oriented games (and young children friendly games) and if you truly want to play Mario games - then you should consider the classic Wii (You can get it for Rs. 20K in India). If you have friends in the US, you can get it even cheaper from there.
- This will basically be your stop gap console. In a couple of years, you will defnitely have to upgrage to an Xbox or a PS4 (or may be the next generation of Nintendo console if that turns out to be good)
Between Xbox and Sony PS4
You can't go wrong by picking either of these consoles (Microsoft
Xbox or Sony PS4). Both are great consoles with a great set of games. In fact, the hard core gamers have one of each.
A few sources Analyzed :
We took into account your preferences (of the user, interests, type of games etc.) and here are our suggestions.
Price : The price point is pretty comparable (for the 500GB version and without Kinect), so we are not including that in the consideration. Both have their share of child friendly games. Xbox (because of Kinect) has different / more.

Reasons to pick PS4
- Console Performance & Graphics : PS4 still seem to have a slight edge with core gamers and game developers (likely due to the slightly superior specifications which translates to better performance)
- If "core gaming" is going to be a priority in the house hold the PS4 is a choice. It is generally agreed that the graphics on PS4 is better and overall it is quicker. (for the discerning gamer)
- Physical activities / games : Given the possibilities of "physical activities" that Kinect enables, we believe you child and family will enjoy various games that allow for you to move and play. It is primarily due to this factor that we believe Xbox+Kinect will be the right gaming console for you. Interesting projects : Apart from these games, given that your child is getting into an age where they will learn programming - the possibilities of doing various "Kinect projects" (with the motion sensor) opens up interesting possibilities. (Check here for some : https://channel9.msdn.com/coding4fun/kinect) Choice of console in Xbox
- The options are : Xbox 360 and Xbox One. However, Xbox 360 is about to be retired (Microsoft will stop supporting it actively by end of 2016), we would suggest to invest in Xbox One.
- Microsoft is rolling out a software update practically every month. So, the console will likely get better with subsequent iterations
- The other factor that we considered was the "Parental Control" (Specifically Timing control - that the Xbox 360 used to support. Unfortunately, Xbox One does not support it currently. But, this is very sought after feature from the community, and we believe Microsoft will support this in the future.
In summary, after considering your specific needs - which includes having some fun games & elements for the children with adults playing too, Xbox + Kinect will be the best option for your needs. The Kinect enables you to play various fun games and overall the Xbox is a good console to invest in.
Choose Xbox 360 + Kinect if you want to keep the budget around 20K
Choose Xbox 360 + Kinect if you want to keep the budget around 20K
- XBox 360 250 GB + Kinect bundle (Around 31K)
- Xbox 360 4GB + Kinect (Around 21K) - but the memory is too low to recommend this
Choose Xbox One + Kinect if you can stretch the budget (double it actuall)
- Xbox One Console (500GB) with Kinect
seems to be a very good fit. This bundle costs Rs. 37,990 on Amazon.
Hope that helps! Do let us know if you have further questions.
